About

Jim Engh is the only recipient of Golf Digest’s Architect of the Year award—a unique honor in the magazine’s history.

Jim Engh is a celebrated golf course architect renowned for transforming rugged, challenging terrains into highly acclaimed golf courses. A graduate of Colorado State University with a B.A. in landscape architecture, Engh became known as a master of mountain design after launching his own firm in 1991. His innovative approach—eschewing conventional 'rules'—has produced a diverse portfolio spanning Great Lakes woodlands, prairies, links, and dramatic mountain landscapes throughout North America, Asia, and Europe. His breakthrough came in 1997 with the Sanctuary course in Colorado, now famous for exclusive charity events. Engh’s creative, unconventional designs have earned widespread recognition: he is the only person ever named 'Architect of the Year' by Golf Digest (2003), and his courses won four 'Best New Course' awards, including three consecutive years from 2001-2003. Notable works include Redlands Mesa, Fossil Trace, Tullymore, and The Club at Black Rock. Engh continues to shape the golfing experience with artistic, adventurous, and memorable courses.
