Course Report
The course name and its local legend are inspired by Medicine Hole, a famous cave nearby atop Killdeer Mountain, considered sacred by indigenous peoples.
About
Medicine Hole Golf Course, designed by Jim Engh, is a public 9-hole course in Killdeer featuring challenging play amidst unique elevation changes. With nearly 120 feet between its highest and lowest greens, distinctive mounded fairways, and scenic views of Badlands terrain, this Jim Engh-designed layout delivers a memorable experience for golfers of all skill levels.
Caddie Tip
Embrace the elevation changes—club selection is key, especially on the holes where the elevation difference from tee to green approaches 120 feet. Watch for swirling winds around the hills and use the mound-laden amphitheater greens to your advantage. Precise approach shots pay off more than distance.
The Main Challenge
The most challenging aspect of Medicine Hole is managing the rolling, elevated terrain and amphitheater-style greens. Strategic tee shots to contoured fairways and the need for precise iron play into perched greens test all golfers’ shot-making abilities, while elevation changes can make each hole play quite differently.
The Good
Golfers love the striking elevation changes and natural amphitheater contours that create a visually dramatic and exciting layout. The open, challenging design by Jim Engh ensures there's always a new shot to master, with dramatic tee-to-green views throughout making each round memorable.
The Not So Good
Golfers most often mention that the remote location can impact some course conditions and amenities, particularly after heavy use or inclement weather. Some golfers would like to see additional signage and improved on-course yardage markers for easier navigation.
