Course Report
Sanctuary Golf Course is owned by the RE/MAX co-founders and is accessible almost exclusively for charity events, raising millions annually for various causes while hosting only around 9,000 rounds per year.
About
Sanctuary Golf Course is a private, invitation-only 18-hole layout designed by Jim Engh and opened in 1996 just south of Denver. Set on dramatic Rocky Mountain foothills without residential development, Sanctuary is known for its isolation, natural terrain, and breathtaking views, playing host to select charity events while preserving its pristine ecosystem and tranquil atmosphere.
Caddie Tip
Bring extra balls and be prepared for dramatic elevation changes that affect club selection. The isolation of each hole means few bailout areas, so favor control over power off the tee. Watch for fast, contoured greens and err on the side of caution when approaching elevated greens to avoid tough recoveries.
The Main Challenge
The toughest aspect of Sanctuary's layout is negotiating its dramatic elevation changes and forced carries. Several holes are routed through ravines and over natural obstacles, testing both shot precision and nerve. The greens are fast and contoured, requiring precise approach shots and deft putting to avoid three-putts and big numbers—especially in the thin mountain air.
The Good
The most acclaimed aspect of Sanctuary is its seclusion and breathtaking setting—each hole unfolds in isolation, surrounded by towering pines and sweeping Rocky Mountain vistas. The wildlife sightings and pure natural beauty make a round here feel both exclusive and serene, a true escape for those lucky enough to play.
The Not So Good
Access is extremely limited, making it nearly impossible for most golfers to enjoy the course outside of charity events or invitations. Some players also find the dramatic elevation changes challenging from a walkability and shot-making perspective, and others note conditions can vary slightly with the demanding environment.
Signature Hole:
#
1
The signature hole at Sanctuary is the opening par 5, which plays 604 yards from an elevated tee, offering stunning panoramic mountain views and demanding a precise tee shot to set up approach strategy. Its dramatic elevation changes, risk-reward options, and natural mountain surroundings make it a memorable introduction to the course.
Clubhouse
The impressive clubhouse features panoramic views of the mountains, luxurious event spaces, and high-end locker rooms, designed to support charity tournaments and exclusive gatherings. Fine dining and attentive service complete the experience, with amenities focused on privacy and comfort.
Practice Facilities
Sanctuary offers a well-maintained driving range and practice greens, blending seamlessly into the natural landscape. Facilities support both warm-up and short game practice before charity events, but access is restricted and no public membership or daily-fee amenities are offered.
