Course Report

Lakota Links is regularly ranked among the top public courses in Colorado and features tee boxes with drops of up to 100 feet, giving players a unique and memorable playing experience.

About

Lakota Links Golf Club, designed by James Engh, is one of Colorado’s top-rated public courses, offering panoramic mountain and canyon views. Open for most of the year, this 18-hole course features dramatic elevation changes and a layout that challenges all skill levels. Its mountain setting, modern amenities, and strong local and national reputation make it a favorite in the region.

Caddie Tip

Stay below the hole on approach shots—many greens slope back-to-front and can be slick, especially in dry conditions. Club up on holes with dramatic elevation drops, but don’t underestimate how winds swirl in the canyons. Keep driver in the bag on tighter holes and take advantage of the course’s generous fairways when available.

The Main Challenge

The most formidable challenge at Lakota Links comes from its elevation changes and canyon-side holes, especially when winds swirl through the valley. Precision off the tee is essential, and poor club selection on downhill par 3s can quickly lead to big numbers. Fast, sloping greens and native grasses off fairways punish errant shots.

The Good

Golfers rave about the exhilarating elevated tee shots, panoramic canyon and mountain vistas, and the challenging but fair layout. The course’s playability for all levels, scenic dining at Lakota Lookout, and friendly staff consistently earn high marks from locals and visitors alike. The natural beauty and dramatic terrain make every round especially memorable.

The Not So Good

Golfers sometimes mention that summer play can be challenging when the course gets dry and firm, particularly on exposed greens and fairways. Pace of play may slow on busy weekends, and some first-timers comment on the need for better on-course signage to navigate elevation changes and routing.[5]
