Course Report

Less than 30,000 yards of dirt were moved to build the course, making it one of Jim Engh's most natural designs in the U.S. The fairways can be up to 90 yards wide and one double green measures 35,000 square feet.

About

Awarii Dunes Golf Club is a public, 18-hole links-style course designed by Jim Engh, inspired by the great links courses of Ireland. Opened in 2011, it is built on Nebraska sand hills with wide fairways, massive undulating greens, and a natural, wind-swept look. The layout blends strategic shotmaking with a rugged, fescue-lined landscape.

Caddie Tip

Keep shots low on windy days, and pay attention to the slopes and undulations on and around the greens. Course management is crucial due to strategic bunkering, fescue, and blind shots. Check the flag location, especially on double greens, and err on the safe side when uncertain about carries over bunkers and native areas.

The Main Challenge

The greatest challenge is contending with ever-present wind and handling the massive, sloping greens. Blind tee or approach shots require careful planning, while strategic bunkering and tall native grass penalize errant shots. Players must judge distances carefully and adapt quickly to changing weather.

The Good

Golfers rave about the course's truly natural links feel, the immense and interesting green complexes, and the variety created by dunes and wind. Many enjoy its flavor of Irish golf transplanted to the Nebraska sand hills, offering a unique challenge far removed from tree-lined or target-style golf.

The Not So Good

Golfers sometimes mention that the wind can be excessive, adding to the difficulty. Some wish for more consistent fairway conditioning in late summer, and newcomers may find navigation challenging due to a few blind shots and the lack of extensive signage or yardage aids in native areas.
