Course Report

Though once branded under the Trump name, Grand Reserve was never actually owned by Donald Trump. It has hosted the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open since 2008, a rare major event for golf in the Caribbean.

About

Grand Reserve Championship Course in Río Grande, Puerto Rico, designed by Tom Kite and opened in 2007, is a renowned 18-hole, par 72 layout that stretches over 7,500 yards along the northern coast. Known for hosting the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open, it features generous fairways, palm-lined holes, and a scenic backdrop of the El Yunque rainforest and Atlantic shoreline.

Caddie Tip

Take advantage of the wide landing areas off the tee, as most holes reward strong driving. The course is especially exposed to ocean winds, so factor this into club selection, particularly on the stretch from holes 11 to 13. On the flat greens, play less break than you think.

The Main Challenge

Wind is a persistent factor, especially on back-nine holes nearest the ocean. Large densely planted grass hazards, extensive bunkering, and water on several fairways present constant threats to offline shots. The exposed, difficult 12th and the penal 4th hole require both precision and strategy to avoid big numbers.

The Good

Golfers love the tropical setting with ocean views, the well-maintained paspalum turf, and the thrill of playing a PGA Tour venue. The course’s routing lets you feel both exposed to the dramatic coastal elements and enclosed by lush tropical landscaping, delivering variety and a strong sense of place.

The Not So Good

Some golfers note that the flat terrain results in a few uninspired or less memorable holes, and the routing leads to awkward transitions between greens and tees, occasionally slowing play. Elevated maintenance costs can mean periodic inconsistencies with bunker quality after storms.
