Course Report

The club is regarded by many as Newport's finest semi-private club but is open to public play, a rarity among similar regional venues.

About

Green Valley Country Club in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, is an 18-hole public course known for its attractive parkland layout and accommodating staff. Designed in the 1950s and continuously updated, it offers a challenging but fair test with tree-lined fairways and quick greens. The course is popular for its versatility and hosts numerous local events.

Caddie Tip

Keep approach shots below the hole on most greens, as the quick surfaces and subtle slopes can make putting above the hole difficult. Bring every club in your bag—holes offer strong variety, with multiple par 5s and long par 4s requiring both distance and precision. Walkers will find the back nine slightly hillier.

The Main Challenge

The real challenge comes from the length of several par 4s and par 5s, especially when playing from the back tees. Fast greens and heavy rough on certain holes reward accuracy and solid course management. The finishing stretch is demanding under pressure.

The Good

Golfers consistently praise the course's well-maintained greens and fairways, the friendly professional staff, and its welcoming mix of public access with private club service standards. The layout encourages use of every club in the bag, making rounds interesting for all skill levels.

The Not So Good

Slow pace of play is occasionally an issue, especially on weekends when the course can become backed up. Some players also wish for even more distinctive or memorable holes; a few feel the par 5s lack standout character.
