Course Report
Hankley Common occupies just 164 acres for the course, but the club owns over 850 acres of pristine heathland, an area designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest for its unique flora and fauna.
About
Hankley Common Golf Club is a classic heathland course in Surrey, England, originally established in 1897. Designed by James Braid and Harry Colt, the course showcases expansive rolling terrain with stunning views across its 850-acre estate, featuring exceptional conditioning, slick greens, and challenging bunkering amid natural heather and pine.
Caddie Tip
Beware the heather off the fairways—anything slightly offline can result in a lost ball or awkward recovery, so club selection and accuracy are crucial. Pay attention to elevation changes on approach shots and plot conservatively around the bunkers, especially on the 8th and finishing 18th. Favor the left side where possible.
The Main Challenge
The most challenging aspect is navigating the thick heather lining the fairways, which punishes wayward shots and demands strategic play. Bunkers are deep and well-placed throughout. Elevation changes on approach can be subtle but demanding, and fast, undulating greens consistently test a player's nerve and touch.
The Good
Golfers love the serenity and spaciousness of the property, with sweeping views, natural heather, and pine framing nearly every hole. The design makes outstanding use of the terrain, with varied hole shapes and strategic bunker placement that challenge shotmaking while celebrating the natural beauty of Surrey.
The Not So Good
Some players wish the course allowed for more public tee times and felt that certain fairways could be more forgiving after rainy spells, as thick heather makes ball retrieval difficult. Occasional slow play was noted during busy summer weekends, and some would prefer expanded practice facilities.
Signature Hole:
#
8
The 8th hole is a par 5 featuring a dramatic tee shot over heather to a fairway with subtle elevation changes. Approaching from the left is key, as the green is protected by bunkers on the right. The hole combines risk-reward strategy with impressive natural vistas, making it a standout on the course.
Clubhouse
Recently refurbished clubhouse features a relaxed spike bar, lounge and dining rooms, terraces with panoramic views, modern locker rooms, and bar & catering with attentive service. Well-stocked pro shop with custom fitting and leading golf brands completes the amenities.
Practice Facilities
A modern driving range, large short-game area, putting green, and custom fitting studio offer a comprehensive experience for warm-up and improvement. The professional shop is well-equipped. However, short-game practice space can fill up on busy days.
