Course Report

Every hole on Hapuna Golf Course offers a view of the Pacific Ocean, a rare distinction even among Hawaii's best courses.

About

Hapuna Golf Course, designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay, is a dramatic, links-style layout stretching 6,875 yards along the Kohala Coast. Opened in 1992, the course features panoramic ocean views from every hole, significant elevation changes, and rugged lava terrain, making it a distinct and scenic Hawaiian golf experience.

Caddie Tip

Bring plenty of balls and factor in elevation changes, prevailing ocean breezes, and the firm turf, especially on approach shots. The course rewards well-placed tee shots; don’t get greedy on the risk-reward par 4s, and take an extra club when playing into the wind—especially on the back nine.

The Main Challenge

The toughest challenges are the elevation changes and swirling ocean winds, which can turn straightforward shots into demanding ones. Forced carries over lava or native areas add pressure, and several holes demand precise club selection, especially where danger lurks close to fairways or greens. The finishing stretch tests both accuracy and nerve.

The Good

Golfers love the spectacular ocean views from every hole, the dramatic elevation changes, and the feeling of seclusion amidst lava landscapes. The course layout provides constant visual drama and variety, making each hole feel distinct. Service is attentive, and the on-course experience is consistently highlighted as memorable and unique to Hawaii.

The Not So Good

Pace of play can suffer during busy periods, especially with resort guests unfamiliar with the routing. Some golfers mention that lava rock hazards and tricky winds make the course especially challenging for higher handicaps. Greens, while generally good, can occasionally get firm and fast, making approach shots tough to hold.
