Course Report

Metropolitan’s original founders were members of Royal Melbourne who refused to move with the club and established 'Metro' nearby. The razor-edged green-side bunkers are considered the cleanest and sharpest in the Sandbelt, possibly the world.

About

Set within Melbourne’s famed Sandbelt, The Metropolitan Golf Club is regarded as one of Australia's finest championship layouts. Originally established in 1908 and shaped by Alister MacKenzie’s architectural ideas, the course is famous for its razor-edged bunker design and superb conditioning. The course consistently hosts major tournaments and is celebrated for its strategic routing, beautifully treed landscape, firm turf, and legendary fast greens.

Caddie Tip

Pay close attention to the wind direction, as it subtly influences most holes and can change quickly. Approach shots should be cautiously planned to avoid the devilish, sharply cut bunkers guarding the undulating greens. Staying below the hole on approach is crucial—downhill putts are exceptionally fast, so think backwards from the green.

The Main Challenge

The greatest challenge lies in the razor-sharp bunker edges and fast, sloping greens. Many fairways visually narrow with bunkers precisely placed to intercept even slightly mistimed drives. Approach shots require not just distance, but careful placement to the correct green tier, as missed greens mean difficult recoveries from sand or rough.

The Good

Golfers rave about the immaculate course presentation, especially the green complexes and distinctive bunkering that visually intimidate yet reward well-thought-out strategy. The Sandbelt turf provides peerless play year-round, and the subtle design nuances mean every round is both challenging and fresh. Many cherish the classic club atmosphere and memorable tournament history.

The Not So Good

Some golfers wish for a slightly more varied routing on the back nine, which was rebuilt in the 1960s following land loss. The exclusivity of access and the relatively high visitor green fee are also occasionally cited as negatives for international guests, and pace of play can be an issue during busy member times.

Signature Hole:

#

5

No items found.

The par 4 5th is regarded by many as Metropolitan's signature hole. Two deep fairway bunkers down the left side force strategic tee shots, while approach play must contend with a green sloping steeply off the right shoulder bunker. The approach is typically a short or mid-iron depending on tee accuracy and calls for precision both in placement and trajectory.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The elegant modern clubhouse provides panoramic views of the 18th green, a full bar and dining options, function spaces, and well-appointed locker rooms. Attention to comfort and service is high, befitting a top private club. Event facilities and a pro shop round out the amenities.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

Metropolitan offers an extensive practice range, short game area, and putting green with the same firm sandbelt turf found on the main course. The short-game area enables realistic bunker and approach practice. Golfers can expect a complete practice experience ahead of their round.
