Course Report
Humewood is South Africa's only true links course, built entirely on sand dunes, and has hosted five South African Opens as well as nine national amateur championships.
About
Humewood Golf Club, designed by Colonel S.V. Hotchkin in 1929, is a revered true links course set on coastal dunes of Port Elizabeth. Renowned for its undulating, wind-swept fairways and natural terrain, Humewood is one of Africa's finest links, consistently ranked among South Africa's top five courses and host to numerous national championships.
Caddie Tip
Keep your tee shots low beneath the wind, especially on longer par 4s and 5s. When approaching greens, favor the front edge to avoid tough up-and-downs from thick coastal rough or pot bunkers. Plan for crosswinds and avoid over-committing off the tee, as errant shots can be lost in dense bush.
The Main Challenge
The toughest aspect of Humewood lies in its relentless wind conditions and penal coastal bush that punishes wayward shots. Its open, undulating fairways offer little shelter, while deep pot bunkers and quick, sloping greens require precision. Surviving the closing stretch under gusty conditions tests every aspect of a player's game.
The Good
Golfers rave about the dramatic links setting, with vast, exposed fairways bordered by natural dunes and thick bush, providing a pure and authentic golfing experience. The ever-present coastal wind and firm-running turf compel inventive shot-making, making every round feeling fresh and demanding for all levels.
The Not So Good
Some visitors note that the clubhouse facilities, though welcoming, can feel dated and basic compared to modern venues. Renovations are ongoing, but golfers sometimes wish for upgraded amenities such as locker rooms, lounge spaces, and improved practice green surfaces.
Signature Hole:
#
4
The par 4 fourth hole is noted for its pronounced dogleg left layout and demanding bunkering. Two deep greenside bunkers flank a narrow, angled green, requiring a strategic approach shot best made from the outside of the dogleg. Wind exposure and a challenging fairway add to its reputation as a standout hole.
Clubhouse
The elegant double-story clubhouse features a scenic main bar overlooking Algoa Bay, a middle lounge, dining area, and spaces suitable for meetings or private functions. Food and drink service is modest but satisfying, with friendly staff and a relaxed vibe suitable for unwinding after a round.
Practice Facilities
Expect a traditional driving range, dedicated short game area, and putting green. The club occasionally hosts golf academies and clinics. While functional for warming up and practice, the facilities are more classic than modern. The pro shop is well-stocked with essentials and offers advice on playing the course.
