Course Report
Kingsbarns was built atop historic golfing grounds that hosted matches as far back as the 18th century and sits beside Viking-era fortifications.
About
Kingsbarns Golf Links is a world-class modern links course on the North Sea coast near St Andrews, designed by Kyle Phillips. Celebrated for panoramic sea views from every hole, it blends traditional Scottish links features with modern playability. Ranked among Europe’s elite, it hosts the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship and is renowned for its immaculate conditioning and friendly hospitality.
Caddie Tip
Prevailing winds shift often, making club selection crucial on coastal holes like 12 and 15. Play conservatively down the left side on doglegs, and trust that the greenside swales will reward low approaches. Ask for local reads on the undulating greens—they can be deceiving from certain angles.
The Main Challenge
The most formidable test at Kingsbarns is negotiating the constant wind that whips off the North Sea, especially on seaside holes like 12 and 15. The course’s undulating greens require precise approach shots and deft putting, while large, deep bunkers and wide fairways reward strategic play but punish misjudged drives and approaches.
The Good
Golfers love the stunning sea vistas visible from every hole, especially the thrilling coastal holes, and consistently praise the immaculate conditioning and friendly welcome. The experience is enhanced by the seamless integration of modern design with classic links features, plus the exceptional hospitality and post-round views from the clubhouse.
The Not So Good
Some visitors find the greens extremely undulating and challenging to read, with pin positions that can make scoring difficult. Slow pace of play on busy days and high green fees are occasionally cited, while others wish for greater variety in inland holes compared to the outstanding coastal stretch.
Signature Hole:
#
15
Hole 15, a par 3, is widely considered Kingsbarns’ signature hole. The tee shot plays dramatically over rugged rocks and crashing waves, demanding a full carry to a perched green framed by the North Sea. Its exposed setting and panoramic coastal views make this one of the most memorable par 3s in Scotland.
Clubhouse
Expect a spacious, comfortable clubhouse with wood-paneled lounges overlooking the 18th green. Amenities include a full-service restaurant, well-stocked pro shop, lockers, showers, and panoramic windows providing dramatic sea and course views. Service is friendly, efficient, and geared to international guests.
Practice Facilities
Comprehensive offerings include a full driving range, dedicated short-game practice areas, large putting green, and complimentary pull carts for warm up and play. PGA professional instruction is available by booking. Facilities are modern and meticulously maintained.
