Course Report

La Cana Golf Club was the first Caribbean course to use paspalum grass that thrives with sea water irrigation, making it uniquely eco-friendly.

About

La Cana Golf Club, designed by P.B. Dye in 2001, features 27 holes set along the Caribbean in Punta Cana. Renowned for 14 ocean-view holes and eco-friendly paspalum grass, it offers strategic bunkering, seaside vistas, and an enjoyable challenge for all skill levels. Frequently compared to Pebble Beach, it is highly rated within the Caribbean golf scene.

Caddie Tip

Caddies are required and especially helpful on the oceanfront holes, where swirling coastal winds and deceptive greens make club selection tricky. Favor conservative lines off the tee, play for the center of the putting surfaces, and rely on local caddie advice about grain and break, especially when putting toward the sea.

The Main Challenge

The primary challenge is mastering holes exposed to coastal winds, especially along the Caribbean Sea. Pot bunkers, waste areas, and forced carries add strategy, while undulating greens demand precise approach shots and confident putting. Oceanfront holes require careful shot shaping and distance control in varying breezes.

The Good

Golfers are captivated by the 14 ocean-view holes, including four directly on the Caribbean, and the consistently scenic, tranquil tropical setting. The eco-friendly design and exceptional service—from caddies to facilities—make each round memorable. Many praise the modern clubhouse, paspalum turf, and dramatic seaside finishing stretch.

The Not So Good

Some visitors comment that certain inland holes lack the drama of the oceanfront stretches. Occasional slow pace of play during peak times, as well as increased fees for non-resort guests, are typical concerns. Maintenance is generally strong, but heavy rain can temporarily affect bunker and fairway conditions.
