Course Report

Both Sam Snead and Jack Nicklaus have played Lakeview and set course records here, adding legendary status to its already celebrated history.

About

Lakeview Golf Resort's Lakeview Course, designed by James Harrison in 1954, offers an engaging parkland layout with scenic views of Cheat Lake. Recognized for its challenging holes and historic guests, the course blends classic tree-lined fairways with elevation changes through the rolling hills of West Virginia.

Caddie Tip

Uphill approach shots are common due to the terrain—club up accordingly, especially on longer holes. Pay attention to tricky green contours, particularly on the finishing holes, where putts can break more than expected. Favor the fairway side with the best angle into greens protected by mature trees.

The Main Challenge

The toughest challenge comes with the elevation changes and the tree-lined fairways requiring well-executed tee shots to avoid trouble. Several holes play uphill or downhill, making club selection key, especially on approaches to elevated greens that are well-protected by bunkers.

The Good

Golfers frequently praise the scenic backdrops overlooking Cheat Lake and the overall layout, which rewards good shot-making but allows room for error. The course’s amenable staff, rich history, and the peaceful natural surroundings create a memorable West Virginia golf experience appreciated by visitors and locals alike.

The Not So Good

Some golfers suggest conditions can fluctuate, reporting occasional rough patches in fairways or slower greens after heavy rains. Drainage improvements and modernization of some amenities could further enhance overall satisfaction, making busy weekends more enjoyable for every guest.
