Course Report
Lancaster Country Club has hosted the U.S. Women’s Open twice, in 2015—where In Gee Chun claimed victory—and again in 2024, cementing its reputation as a championship-caliber venue.
About
Lancaster Country Club’s Flynn Course is a 1920 William Flynn design, renowned for its classic parkland style across rolling terrain and strategic routing alongside the Conestoga River. Recently restored, the course is regularly ranked among America’s top 100 classics and has hosted multiple U.S. Women’s Open Championships. The club features 27 holes and outstanding practice amenities, offering a premier experience for discerning golfers.
Caddie Tip
Precision off the tee is vital, with several doglegs requiring careful club selection to find the right angles into firm, well-guarded greens. Pay extra attention to elevation—many approach shots are uphill or downhill, so judge your yardages carefully. On the signature 12th, do not miss short or left, or you’ll end up wet.
The Main Challenge
Lancaster’s greatest challenge lies in its demanding approach shots—ten holes require uphill second shots to elevated greens, routinely calling for longer clubs and precise distance control. Many greens are well-protected by deep bunkers and runoff areas, and the ever-present Conestoga River adds a risk-reward dynamic on several holes.
The Good
Golfers rave about the classic architecture and the challenge of the Flynn Course’s rolling terrain, which demands thoughtful strategy on every hole. The scenic river crossings and pristine conditioning elevate the experience, and hosting major championships gives the course an undeniable prestige and championship feel.
The Not So Good
Some members suggest that tee time availability can be limited around major events or peak weekends, while others would like to see more open play for families and juniors on the primary Flynn layout. High-level difficulty also means some higher-handicap players wish for improved playability on several demanding holes.
Signature Hole:
#
12
The par-3 12th hole is the most iconic at Lancaster Country Club, playing across the Conestoga River to a beautifully bunkered green perched above the water. Precision is critical, as wind and elevation changes can dramatically affect club selection. This memorable hole features in championship broadcasts and is beloved for its scenic, challenging setting.
Clubhouse
The traditional clubhouse offers formal and casual dining, event spaces, locker rooms, a pro shop, and social gathering areas. Members enjoy tennis, swimming, and a robust calendar of social events along with golf, creating a comprehensive private club experience.
Practice Facilities
The expansive practice facility features a 1.5-acre driving range with multiple targets up to 225 yards, a practice bunker, and short game areas, allowing for top-tier preparation. Turf and artificial mats extend practice during shoulder seasons. Instruction and club fitting are available from PGA staff.
