Course Report
The South Course hosted the Senior Skins Game from 1990 to 2000, attracting legends like Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer.
About
Designed by Homer Flint, the Mauna Lani South Course is a par-72, 18-hole resort course nestled along the stunning Kohala Coast. Renowned for its lush fairways, dramatic lava formations, and breathtaking ocean views, it offers memorable holes including some of Hawaii’s most scenic. Featuring Bermuda grass, the course blends natural beauty with challenge and is a frequent favorite for visitors to the Big Island.
Caddie Tip
Pay close attention to the influence of ocean breezes, particularly on the exposed coastal holes. When approaching greens, factor in subtle breaks that can be difficult to detect, and don’t underestimate the speed—especially when putting towards the water, as the grain often runs that direction.
The Main Challenge
The primary challenge at Mauna Lani South comes from the frequent crosswinds and numerous forced carries over black lava fields, requiring precision and shot-making creativity. The undulating fairways and greens demand smart placement, while ocean-side holes demand focus to avoid both water and wind hazards.
The Good
Golfers love the breathtaking beauty of the dramatic lava flows meeting lush fairways and the uninterrupted views of the Pacific Ocean. The iconic ocean holes, particularly the 15th, provide a one-of-a-kind experience that is as visually stunning as it is exciting to play. Wildlife sightings, including migrating whales in winter, add to the magic.
The Not So Good
Some visitors note that the tropical sun and ocean winds can lead to inconsistent turf quality on a few holes, especially during peak dry spells. Occasional maintenance work may interfere with pristine conditions, and some find the green fee relatively high compared to other island courses.
Signature Hole:
#
15
The par 3 15th hole at Mauna Lani South Course is considered one of the most photographed over-the-water holes in the world. Playing 190 yards across a bay, the shot must carry lava and Pacific surf to a clover-shaped green surrounded by bunkers, creating a thrilling and scenic challenge that defines the course.
Clubhouse
Shared with the North Course, the modern clubhouse features a pro shop with top brands, high-end locker rooms, and a restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the course. Additional amenities include club rental, lessons, and spa access for resort guests.
Practice Facilities
The club offers a full driving range with ocean views, short-game area with bunkers, and a large putting green. Facilities are well-maintained, providing a relaxed setting to warm up before your round. Range balls and bottled water are included in the green fee.
