Course Report

Medinah Country Club hosted three major championship layouts; Course #2 underwent a $3.6 million restoration returning it to its late 1920s character with aerial photos guiding the process.

About

Medinah Country Club Course #2 is a historic parkland layout designed by Tom Bendelow and restored in 2017 by Rees Jones. It features state-of-the-art USGA greens, bentgrass fairways, and classic bunkering, challenging golfers with variety and strategic options while highlighting vintage design elements.

Caddie Tip

Play to the correct side of fairways for easier approaches, especially on holes with sloped landing areas. Green surrounds often favor recovery shots via bump-and-run or creative chipping—leave approaches short rather than risk tough bunkers. Pay attention to pin placement as collection areas present challenging up-and-downs.

The Main Challenge

The biggest challenge lies in the undulating greens and complex bunkering restored to their 1920s dimension, requiring precision in approach shots and nimble short game skills. Tree-lined fairways demand accuracy off the tee, and deep collection areas test recovery ability throughout.

The Good

Golfers love the beautifully restored greens and bunkers, which allow a range of creative recovery shots. The scenic routing, especially the approach to 18 framed by the iconic clubhouse, makes the experience memorable and historically significant, with playability for all skill levels.

The Not So Good

Some members have suggested that Course #2 can play too softly after rain due to drainage, and while tree removal has improved playability, dense rough in certain areas is still a challenge. Others desire more modern touches for clubhouse facilities adjacent to this course.
