Course Report

Montecastillo Golf Club hosted the European Tour's Volvo Masters for five consecutive years, showcasing its appeal to top professional players and cementing its place among Spain's elite venues.

About

Montecastillo Golf Club is a renowned 18-hole, par-72 course located in Jerez, designed by Jack Nicklaus. Known for hosting the Volvo Masters from 1997 to 2001, the course challenges players with its strategic layout, elevated greens, and undulating fairways. Modern practice facilities and a luxury resort atmosphere enhance the full golf experience.

Caddie Tip

Be patient on the back nine, where the wind is often strongest and the elevation changes increase. Stay below the hole on fast greens, especially on the 18th, to avoid challenging downhill putts. Take plenty of club on the par-5s as they play longer than the yardage suggests.

The Main Challenge

Montecastillo’s greatest challenge lies in its fast, sloping greens and the numerous water hazards, particularly on the finishing holes. Undulating fairways, strategic bunkering, and variable coastal winds demand careful club selection and thoughtful play throughout the round.

The Good

Golfers love the strategic and varied Jack Nicklaus design, particularly the memorable water features and strong closing holes. The course’s history hosting major European Tour events combines with the picturesque views over rolling Andalusian landscapes for a championship atmosphere.

The Not So Good

Golfers often mention that maintenance outside tournament season can be inconsistent, especially bunkers and rough areas. Some feel the pace of play can slow dramatically during busy resort periods and that signage between holes could be better.

The par-4 18th at Montecastillo is a dramatic finishing hole, featuring an elevated tee that overlooks a demanding dogleg fairway bordered by water hazards. Approach shots must be precise to reach a well-defended green surrounded by bunkers, making it a memorable and challenging close to the round.

Clubhouse

The modern clubhouse offers panoramic terrace views, locker rooms, pro shop, and fine local cuisine in a full-service restaurant. Additional amenities include spa and wellness facilities, equipment rental, and spaces for events and groups.

Practice Facilities
