Course Report

Montreux was the only Jack Nicklaus Signature Design in the Reno-Tahoe area and hosted the PGA Tour’s Reno-Tahoe Open from 1999 through 2019.

About

Montreux Golf & Country Club is a private Jack Nicklaus Signature course nestled at the base of Mt. Rose between Reno and Lake Tahoe. Opened in 1997, the course meanders over 7,500 yards through towering pines, dramatic elevation changes, and high-mountain scenery. Montrêux has earned national recognition for its immaculate conditioning and previously hosted the PGA Tour’s Reno-Tahoe Open.

Caddie Tip

Play conservatively off the tee on par 4s and par 5s with elevation changes, as distance can be deceptive at this altitude. On the signature 17th, the tee shot plays much shorter than the yardage due to the severe drop—club down and focus on placement more than power.

The Main Challenge

Montreux’s toughest test is controlling distance and trajectory through memorable elevation changes and firm, fast greens. The Bear Trap stretch (holes 6–8) and the 17th both require precise shot-making, with thick woods, water, and deep bunkers ready to penalize wayward shots. Consistent winds from the mountains only heighten the challenge.

The Good

Golfers love the mountain scenery, immaculate greens, and spectacular elevation changes at Montreux. The variety in shot values, tree-lined fairways, and peaceful setting set the course apart, especially with world-class amenities and a secluded, private atmosphere. The sense of isolation and pristine conditioning make every round feel special.

The Not So Good

Some golfers mention Montreux’s exclusivity and high membership cost as limiting broader access. Others have noted occasional pace-of-play issues on tournament weeks, and a need for better signage or guidance for first-time players navigating the more secluded back-nine holes.

Club selection and accuracy are paramount on this visually stunning hole.
