Course Report
Moraine Country Club hosted the PGA Championship in 1945, won by Byron Nelson during his streak of 11 consecutive victories, and it is ranked 7th among Ohio’s top courses by Golf Digest as of 2025.
About
Moraine Country Club is a classic private club renowned in Ohio for its rolling terrain, strategic bunkering, and firm, fast conditions. Designed by Alex Nipper Campbell in 1930 and restored by Keith Foster, the course blends Scottish influences with Midwestern charm. It is recognized among the state’s elite, regularly hosting top amateur tournaments and offering a challenging yet rewarding layout.
Caddie Tip
Approach shots require careful club selection because of the elevation changes and tight, undulating greens. Many holes reward conservative play off the tee while penalizing aggressive misses. Keep approach shots below the hole where possible, as Moraine’s greens can be deceptively quick—particularly above the pin.
The Main Challenge
The most demanding part of the course is its approach play to firm, fast, and undulating greens set on high ground. Many holes have deceptive slopes, and subtle contours near the greens place a premium on accuracy. The combination of elevation changes and deep bunkering make several holes particularly daunting, especially under tournament conditions.
The Good
Golfers praise Moraine’s beautifully contoured land, strategic design, and especially the way the course rewards precise approach play. The club’s major renovations in recent years helped restore classic features, improving both playability and visual appeal. The exceptional walking experience across rolling hills is a particular highlight.
The Not So Good
Some members and guests have noted that heavy rains can affect fairway conditions despite recent drainage improvements. Pace of play can be slower during busy club events, and the private nature of the club restricts broader access for non-members eager to play a celebrated layout.
Signature Hole:
#
16
The 16th features a downhill tee shot to a fairly wide 30-yard fairway framed by bunkers on both sides. A drive of over 275 yards can take advantage of a steep slope to roll out and leave a short approach shot to the green. The green is protected by a quartet of bunkers but has a wide-open front, allowing players to run the ball onto the raised putting surface.
Clubhouse
The recently renovated clubhouse features upscale dining, a bar, lounges, locker rooms, and event spaces. Members enjoy a vibrant social calendar, attentive service, and modern amenities in a traditional setting.
Practice Facilities
Moraine offers a full driving range, putting green, and dedicated short-game area. All facilities are well-kept and suited for serious warm-up or practice. Lessons and clinics are available from PGA professionals for members.
