Course Report

Old Works is the only Jack Nicklaus Signature course built on an EPA Superfund site, using black slag from the property in its dramatic bunkers.

About

Old Works Golf Course in Anaconda, Montana, is a Jack Nicklaus Signature design built on a reclaimed Superfund mining site. Opened in 1997, the course features generous fairways, undulating greens, and distinctive black slag bunkers. Integrated historic mining ruins and spectacular mountain views create a unique experience that combines challenging play with a memorable sense of place.

Caddie Tip

Keep tee shots in the generous fairways but beware of the black slag bunkers, which play firmer and require less explosion from the sand. Pay special attention to approach shots into the large, undulating greens—missing on the wrong side means a tough two-putt.

The Main Challenge

The biggest challenge at Old Works is navigating the enormous, undulating greens and avoiding the deep black slag bunkers that hug fairways and greens. Elevation changes add complexity to club selection, while water hazards and abundant native areas penalize errant shots.

The Good

Golfers rave about the unique black slag bunkers, relic mining architecture, and stunning views of the Smelter Stack. The combination of challenging shot values and the history embedded in the landscape create a truly one-of-a-kind Montana golf experience that feels special on every hole.

The Not So Good

Some players note that late summer rough can become thick and penal, potentially slowing pace of play. Occasional comments mention that grass between holes can get patchy during peak heat, and some bunker areas may be difficult for average players due to firmness.

Signature Hole:

#

Strategic tee placement is crucial as Warm Springs Creek and the infamous bunkers threaten both drive and approach. The finishing green, with its complex undulations, offers a final test for any match.
