Course Report

Palmas Athletic Club is one of Puerto Rico's largest sporting resorts and the Flamboyan Course is widely ranked among the top courses in the Caribbean.

About

The Palmas Athletic Club Flamboyan Course in Humacao, Puerto Rico, was designed by Rees Jones and opened in 1998. This premier 18-hole layout stretches 7,117 yards along lakes, the Candelero River, and the Caribbean Sea, offering challenging play and stunning ocean views. It combines strategic design with tropical beauty, drawing golfers of all skill levels for a memorable Caribbean golf experience.

Caddie Tip

Embrace the coastal breezes, especially on holes near the water, which can play longer than the yardage indicates. Bring an extra club for the 12th and always check pin positions as many greens are raised, making misses difficult to recover from. Approach shots must be well planned due to water hazards and undulating greens.

The Main Challenge

The toughest part of Flamboyan is negotiating the water hazards, especially on the back nine. Prevailing winds add to the challenge, forcing precision on approaches and club selection. The course tests course management, with raised greens and strategic bunkering making for demanding recovery shots.

The Good

Golfers love the dynamic layout, ocean and river views, and overall resort setting. Many visitors praise the well-maintained greens and numerous memorable holes—especially those bordering water—and appreciate the course’s accessibility both for locals and travelers.

The Not So Good

Some golfers note the high humidity and strong winds can make rounds feel demanding, and at times, maintenance can lag during the wet season. Pace of play may stretch on weekends due to popularity, and bunker conditions can be inconsistent after heavy rain.
