Course Report

The course is frequently listed in Golf Digest’s 'Best of State' rankings and is considered among the most scenic in the world due to its views of mountains and glaciers.

About

Palmer Golf Course, designed by Iliad Corporation, is one of Alaska’s premier public courses. Stretching to 7,300 yards, this scenic parkland layout offers spectacular views of Pioneer Peak, the Matanuska River, and Knik Glacier. The links-style course presents a challenging yet accessible round, with four sets of tees and acclaimed practice facilities.

Caddie Tip

Bring extra layers even in summer—mountain winds can make conditions change quickly. Carefully manage your approach shots, as the open terrain encourages bold plays but can leave you exposed to gusts. Trust local yardages; thin air at altitude can affect shot distance and trajectory.

The Main Challenge

Players find the exposed location along the Matanuska River especially challenging on windy days. The relatively flat, open terrain can lead to deceptive approach shots, while firm fairways reward strong driving but punish errant shots that stray toward deep native rough or out-of-bounds areas.

The Good

Golfers love the panoramic views of Pioneer Peak and the surrounding Alaskan landscape that are visible from nearly every hole. The elevated setting and open design offer a distinctive sense of scale and tranquility, making every round memorable for its scenery as much as the quality of play.

The Not So Good

Some players comment that the wind can at times be severe, making rounds more difficult. Others mention that summer conditioning, while generally good for Alaska, can lag behind courses in warmer climates, especially early or late in the season.
