Course Report

Palouse Ridge was built on the site of the old WSU nine-hole course but transformed the land into a tournament-caliber layout, regularly hosting NCAA events and the Washington State Cougar teams.

About

Palouse Ridge Golf Club, designed by John Harbottle III, is a dramatic public 18-hole course on Washington State University's campus. Known for rolling hills and panoramic views of the Palouse, it features challenging holes, well-groomed bentgrass greens, and hosts both the WSU Cougar golf teams and visiting players seeking a bold Inland Northwest golf experience.

Caddie Tip

Accuracy and club selection are crucial at Palouse Ridge, especially with swirling winds on exposed holes. Many greens are elevated and well-guarded. Favor safer targets below the hole, and be conscious of wind shifts. For the 5th hole, a prudent layup short of the wetlands sets up a manageable third shot to a firm, shallow green.

The Main Challenge

The greatest challenges at Palouse Ridge are the wind exposure on elevated holes, deep fescue off the fairways, and well-bunkered green complexes. Strategic shot placement is vital to avoid hazards, while contouring and undulating greens test short game and putting ability throughout the round.

The Good

Golfers love the dramatic elevation changes, panoramic views of the Palouse hills, and the challenging but fair layout crafted by John Harbottle III. The course’s conditioning and memorable strategic holes stand out. Many also appreciate the signature holes’ risk-reward elements, and the quiet, natural ambiance around much of the routing.

The Not So Good

Some players note walkability is difficult—significant elevation changes and long green-to-tee transitions make walking a physical challenge. Others feel certain areas could benefit from improved drainage in wet weather and faster pace of play during peak college event seasons.

Signature Hole:

#

5

No items found.

The par 5 5th hole stretches 589 yards and involves a strategic tee shot to a split fairway divided by wetlands. Golfers must decide whether to lay up short or challenge a carry over water for a better approach. The green is guarded by bunkers and the wetlands, demanding both accuracy and thoughtful strategy to score well.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The clubhouse features a pro shop, casual bar and grill overlooking the course, event spaces, and locker rooms. Golfers enjoy indoor seating with views and outdoor patios. Merchandise, rental clubs, and teaching services are also available, creating a welcoming environment for both students and visitors.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

Palouse Ridge offers an excellent practice facility with a large driving range, putting green, and short game area. Lessons with PGA professionals are available, and practice areas are highly rated for both everyday play and competitive preparation.
