Course Report
After a devastating fire destroyed the clubhouse, Pawtucket Golf Club became Pawtucket Country Club in 1955, continuing its legacy as one of Rhode Island's most respected private clubs.
About
Pawtucket Country Club, established in 1902 and re-designed by Willie Park Jr. in 1924, is a classic parkland course known for its mature oaks, undulating bentgrass greens, and inviting fairways. The par-69 layout stretches 6,500 yards and is celebrated for its smooth putting surfaces and well-placed hazards, offering a genuine challenge while maintaining an enjoyable playing experience.
Caddie Tip
Focus on positioning off the tee, as mature oaks frequently block clear approaches, especially on the back nine. Many greens are slick and subtly contoured—play for the center of the greens and keep approach shots below the hole to avoid precarious downhill putts.
The Main Challenge
The toughest aspect of the course is navigating the narrow, tree-lined fairways that severely punish errant drives. The slick, undulating greens demand precision on approach and touch with the flatstick—misplaced shots often result in difficult recoveries or three-putts.
The Good
Golfers consistently praise the outstanding condition of the bentgrass greens, which roll fast and true throughout the season. The classic layout, lined with mature oaks, offers a strategic test with a variety of approach shots, leading many to return for the challenge and charm.
The Not So Good
Some members and guests have cited the relatively restricted length as limiting for longer hitters, and occasional slow play during busy member events. Additional tee options and ongoing drainage improvements on select fairways could further enhance the experience.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The 18th hole is a par 4 that finishes in front of the clubhouse, typically playing around 379 yards. This closing hole requires a precise tee shot to an oak-lined fairway and an accurate approach to an undulating green, providing a memorable and often pivotal finish for matches at Pawtucket Country Club.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse features a full-service restaurant, bar, modern locker rooms, and banquet spaces. Members enjoy an Olympic-size pool, outdoor patio dining, and a welcoming social atmosphere that caters to families and golfers alike.
Practice Facilities
Pawtucket Country Club provides a practice putting green, chipping area, and a modest driving range suitable for irons. While not expansive, these facilities are well maintained and offer a focused warm-up experience ahead of play.
