Course Report

Legend has it Herb Kohler tried to buy Pine Hills before developing the famous Kohler resort courses nearby, a testament to its reputation among serious golfers.

About

Pine Hills Country Club, designed by Harry Smead, sits on 186 acres of rolling wooded terrain in Sheboygan. Established in 1928, its classic parkland design features challenging, small greens and dramatic landforms. The course has hosted US Open qualifiers and is known for its exceptional conditioning and strategic shot values.

Caddie Tip

Approach shots demand careful attention to pin position—leaving your ball below the hole can be vital, as many greens have challenging internal contours. Conservative lines often reward players more than aggressive play, especially on approach shots to the smaller targets.

The Main Challenge

The small, fast greens place a premium on approach shot accuracy and putting skill, with many contours that reward precise play but can repel marginal shots. Routed through rolling topography with narrow fairways, the course punishes lightly-struck drives and misjudged angles.

The Good

Golfers consistently praise the exceptional conditioning and quick, true Bentgrass greens. The course routing through rolling, wooded terrain provides both strategic variety and visual interest from the opening hole to the final green, making each round memorable and rewarding.

The Not So Good

Some members note that certain holes could benefit from tree removal to open strategic options and improve turf health. During busy times, the pace of play can be impacted, especially due to narrow corridors and challenging green complexes.

Signature Hole:

#

7

No items found.

The downhill par 3 7th is Pine Hills' signature hole, featuring a raised green set fifty yards behind the Pigeon River, which meanders in front of the player and creates a demanding mid-iron shot. Precise club selection and trajectory are needed to find the small, well-defended putting surface.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The clubhouse features locker rooms, dining facilities, banquet rooms for events, and a fully-stocked pro shop. Members also enjoy outdoor patio dining and attentive golf staff, as well as several social and family-focused club events each year.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

Pine Hills offers a full grass driving range, dedicated short game practice area, and putting greens maintained to the same standards as the course, providing members with comprehensive warm-up and improvement opportunities.
