Course Report
Pine Needles is the first course in the United States to be awarded four U.S. Women’s Open Championships, underscoring its status as a premier tournament venue.
About
Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club, designed by Donald Ross in 1927 and renovated by Kyle Franz in 2007, is acclaimed as one of North Carolina’s outstanding golf courses. The layout winds through rolling hills and towering pines, presenting strategic bunkering and classic Ross greens. Renowned for its championship pedigree and hospitality, it is a must-play in the Sandhills region.
Caddie Tip
Conservative play off the tee often pays dividends at Pine Needles. Approach shots should be kept below the hole, as Donald Ross’s greens here are fast and well-contoured—downhill putts can get away quickly. Study pin positions carefully, especially on the tricky back nine.
The Main Challenge
The most difficult part of Pine Needles is the combination of tight, tree-lined fairways and the famously undulating Ross greens that test approach accuracy and short game precision. Fast green speeds and subtle slopes put a premium on controlling spin and approach angles.
The Good
Golfers consistently rave about the authentic Donald Ross design—strategic bunkering, imaginative green complexes, and the natural way the course flows through the pines. The course’s condition is usually excellent, and its championship history and inviting southern hospitality enhance the experience.
The Not So Good
Some players mention that pace of play can lag during peak periods, especially when hosting larger groups or events. Others note that width on certain holes can make it less intimidating for better players, and some golfers would like expanded amenities or upgrades to the clubhouse facilities.
Signature Hole:
#
16
The par 4 16th hole stands out with a gently doglegging fairway flanked by tall pines, requiring a precise tee shot to set up a demanding approach to a cleverly bunkered green. The elevated putting surface and subtle slopes make this hole a true Donald Ross test, penalizing wayward shots and rewarding accuracy.
Clubhouse
Pine Needles features a historic, rustic-style lodge with 74 guest rooms, a fine dining restaurant, grill and bar, pro shop, event spaces, and amenities like a fitness center, pool, and tennis courts. Comfortable lodgings and attentive service are hallmarks.
Practice Facilities
The club offers a full driving range, large putting green, and short game area with bunkers. The practice grounds are maintained at a high standard, providing members and guests ample opportunity to warm up or refine skills before a round.
