Course Report

Piping Rock was one of the first American clubs to feature classic 'template' holes inspired by designs from legendary UK links, and the club still boasts polo facilities and vintage architecture.

About

Piping Rock Club is a revered Golden Age layout in Locust Valley, New York, designed by Charles B. Macdonald and Seth Raynor in 1911. Featuring bold template holes and restored by Bruce Hepner, the course combines challenging architecture, classic strategies, and squarish greens. It’s rated among the USA’s finest, boasting a storied history and an exclusive private atmosphere.

Caddie Tip

Aim for the center of the greens, as their shapes are complex and edges fall away sharply. Approach from the best angle on template holes—take extra care on angles and distance, especially on the Road and Redan holes. Club selection is critical when playing into the wind on back-nine approach shots, and uphill putts are always preferable.

The Main Challenge

The routing is continually demanding with bold green contours, treacherous bunkering, and several classic template holes requiring specific angles for approach shots. The finishing stretch, especially the 16th through 18th, poses a real test with elevation changes and precision required on every shot.

The Good

Golfers most appreciate the unique character and strategic depth of the Macdonald/Raynor design—especially the collection of template holes that reward thinking golf. Many cherish the historic clubhouse setting and the club’s classic, almost unchanged Golden Age ambiance.

The Not So Good

Some golfers wish for more modern practice facilities and slightly improved accessibility. Occasional criticism targets tighter fairways and long rough after major tournaments, which can hamper everyday playability for average members.

Signature Hole:

#

18

No items found.

The signature 18th, a par 5 measuring 538 yards, ascends through a double dogleg to finish beneath the historic clubhouse. Bunkers narrow landing options on both shots, and the approach requires carrying the final slope to a well-defended green, all with the majestic clubhouse as a backdrop.

Clubhouse

The historic clubhouse features formal and informal dining, locker rooms, a well-appointed pro shop, and elegant social spaces. There are also tennis and polo grounds, catering to members’ broader sporting interests.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

Practice offerings include a main driving range adjacent to the first hole, a short game area, and putting greens. While classic in style rather than ultra-modern, these facilities are ample for honing all aspects of the game.
