Course Report

The Makai Course features six oceanfront holes, making it one of the most scenic layouts in the Hawaiian Islands.

About

The Princeville Makai Golf Club is a Robert Trent Jones Jr. design that opened in 1971 and was renovated in 2009. Stretching over 7,200 yards with six sets of tees, this par-72 course features Seashore Paspalum turf, winds around lakes and native woodlands, and offers dramatic coastal and mountain views. Known for immaculate conditioning and its Aloha spirit.

Caddie Tip

Bring extra balls for the challenging oceanfront holes, especially the par 3s where swirling winds can affect your approach. Focus on controlling your distances, particularly on holes exposed to the Pacific breezes. The greens are well-protected, so play to the safe side rather than chasing pins.

The Main Challenge

The toughest aspect of Princeville Makai is handling the frequent winds along the exposed oceanfront holes, especially the 7th and 13th. Tight landing areas near cliffs and water hazards, combined with slick Paspalum greens and bold bunkering, demand precise shotmaking.

The Good

Golfers consistently praise the stunning views of Hanalei Bay, Mount Makana, and the Pacific coastline from multiple vantage points throughout the course. The immaculate conditions and the unique blend of lush woodlands and dramatic coastal holes create a truly unforgettable Hawaiian golf experience.

The Not So Good

Some players note that the coastal winds can make play unpredictable, leading to slow rounds, and the premium green fees are among the highest in Hawaii. Occasional course closures due to heavy rains or maintenance are also a minor frustration for visiting golfers.
