Course Report

Rainmakers implements a special local rule allowing golfers to move their ball if their shot lands in an elk track, thanks to the club’s thriving resident elk herd.

About

Rainmakers Golf Club in Alto, designed by renowned architect Robert Trent Jones Jr., is carved into the high mountain terrain with arroyos and natural rock outcrops. It is repeatedly recognized as one of New Mexico's top private residential courses and offers breathtaking views of the southern Rockies and a challenging 18-hole layout for all skill levels.

Caddie Tip

Due to the elevation above 7,000 feet, adjust all your yardages as shots will generally fly farther than usual; take extra time to read both the wind and subtle mountain breaks around the greens—local knowledge and conservative strategy can save several strokes.

The Main Challenge

The greatest challenge is the combination of significant elevation change and penal natural features. Deep arroyos, dramatic slopes, and sloping greens demand disciplined shot selection and execution. Golfers must deal with swirling mountain winds, precise uphill and downhill approaches, and punishing missed greens.

The Good

Golfers consistently rave about the incredible mountain scenery and unique holes designed by Robert Trent Jones II—many cite the dramatic elevation changes, artful strategic bunkering, and the tranquil setting that immerses players in the southern Rockies’ natural beauty.

The Not So Good

While the golf course is superbly maintained, some visitors note the challenging walkability and occasional difficulty in securing tee times for non-members, as well as the need for more frequent food and beverage service hours outside the main restaurant’s schedule.

The closing 18th, a par 4, plays dramatically downhill with panoramic mountain backdrops. Demanding accuracy both off the elevated tee and on approach to a well-protected green, it is often cited as the best finishing hole in New Mexico and rewards bold play while punishing indecision or errant shots.
