Course Report
Eight of the holes are routed around five small lakes, a rare feature for a desert golf course. You may catch glimpses of the nearby White Sands Missile Range from several points on the course.
About
Red Hawk Golf Club in Las Cruces, New Mexico is a public 18-hole course designed by Ken Dye, set at the base of the Organ Mountains. The layout features a blend of links and prairie dune characteristics across 100 acres, with significant water hazards and beautiful desert vistas, offering a unique high-desert golf experience for all levels.
Caddie Tip
Take note of the wind direction before you tee off and select a tee box that matches your skill level. The greens are often firm and well-defended by bunkers or water, so play conservative approaches when out of position, and don't underestimate the effect of elevation changes.
The Main Challenge
Red Hawk’s most notable challenge comes from its length and desert wind exposure. Water hazards and strategic bunkering force thoughtful shot selection. Holes such as the long par 3 third and the daunting par 5 fifth test both power and precision, especially during gusty afternoons when accuracy is paramount.
The Good
Golfers love Red Hawk's mix of scenic desert views, challenging water features, and the natural quiet of the surrounding landscape. The course delivers both visual drama and strategic interest with the Organ Mountains as a backdrop and fairways that play through true Southwest terrain.
The Not So Good
Recent reviews mention ongoing bunker renovations and some inconsistent conditions outside the growing season, with certain areas under repair and occasionally slow greens. Improving bunker consistency and attention to player etiquette on green repair could enhance play further.
Signature Hole:
#
3
Hole 3 is a par 3 that plays over 240 yards from the tips, presenting a formidable test. Water guards the entire right side of the green, demanding both distance and accuracy. Its exposed setting amplifies wind challenges, making club selection tricky and creating a visually striking, memorable shot.
Clubhouse
The modern clubhouse features a pro shop, restaurant and bar, event space for tournaments or banquets, and locker facilities. It’s designed as a social gathering point for both daily golfers and larger events, with indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the course.
Practice Facilities
Red Hawk offers a full driving range, short game area, and putting green. Private lessons and clinics with PGA professionals are available. The pro shop is well-stocked, and there’s an on-site restaurant offering local and classic golf fare in a relaxed, new clubhouse atmosphere.
