Course Report
The Golden Bear course at Pine Valley hosted the prestigious 2005 Johnnie Walker Classic, with Adam Scott emerging victorious at 18-under par.
About
Pine Valley Golf Resort & Country Club, designed by Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II, is China’s first invitation-only club, featuring an elite, world-class layout northwest of Beijing. Set among the Yan Mountains and close to the Great Wall, the 18-hole Golden Bear course opened in 1998 and has hosted numerous high-profile tournaments, offering a private, exclusive golfing environment with top-tier service.
Caddie Tip
With parkland design and gently undulating, tree-lined fairways, focus on strategic positioning and club selection. Approaches often play into elevated or well-bunkered greens. Caddies recommend caution on fast, firm greens, and putting below the hole is key.
The Main Challenge
The toughest challenge lies in the combination of length, narrow tree-lined fairways, and well-protected, contoured greens. With fast green speeds and punitive bunkering, Pine Valley demands both strategic course management and high-level shot-making skills throughout.
The Good
Golfers praise the course for its seclusion, immaculate conditions, and luxurious amenities. The top-rated Jack Nicklaus design offers beautiful scenery, especially with mountain backdrops, and memorable holes that reward both precision and creativity, making it a sought-after destination for high-level play.
The Not So Good
Membership exclusivity restricts access, disappointing wider golf audiences and traveling players. Some visiting golfers note occasional slow play and high costs. Finding tee times as a guest can be difficult due to access policies.
