Course Report

Grafarholt offers golf under the midnight sun during Iceland’s midsummer, with tee times often available after midnight when the sun barely sets.

About

Grafarholt, designed by Swedish architect Nils Skjöld and opened in 1963, is Iceland’s oldest 18-hole course and recognized as its top championship venue. Situated on varied terrain with lava and heather, this par-71 challenge features memorable city and mountain views, and frequently hosts leading national and international tournaments.

Caddie Tip

Club selection is critical on windy days at Grafarholt, as elevation changes and exposed fairways can dramatically alter distance and direction. Take extra care with approach shots into greens guarded by heather and volcanic rock—accuracy is rewarded, and the sloping greens add further challenge.

The Main Challenge

The course tests strategy with its elevation changes, narrow fairways lined with lava and heather, wind exposure, and undulating greens. The back nine is particularly tough when winds blow off the bay, making club selection and accuracy paramount to scoring well.

The Good

Golfers love the spectacular panoramic views over Reykjavik and distant glaciers, especially on clear days. The naturally rugged landscape, unique Icelandic foliage, and variable light conditions—especially in midsummer—create a memorable, atmospheric experience for both locals and visitors.

The Not So Good

Players regularly comment on the greens being less consistent, especially early in the season, due to Iceland’s challenging climate and late turf growth. Some wish for improvements in bunkering detail and better maintenance of the rough adjacent to fairways.
