Course Report

Golf returned to the Olympics for the first time since 1904 at this course during the Rio 2016 Games.

About

Designed by Gil Hanse for the 2016 Summer Olympics, Rio Olympic Golf Course offers 18 championship holes on sandy terrain within the Marapendi Natural Reserve. Known for its Paspalum greens and Zoysia fairways, the course delivers a strategic layout blending challenge with scenic views. Post-Olympics, it has welcomed both public play and pro events.

Caddie Tip

Wind off the Atlantic can change direction quickly—check the flag on every shot and select club accordingly. On the back nine, favor the right side off the tee as many greens slope back-to-front. Approach play accuracy is critical due to run-off areas surrounding Paspalum greens.

The Main Challenge

The course’s strongest test is navigating the exposed back nine in breezy weather, compounded by strategic bunkering and run-off areas around Paspalum greens. Long par 4s and the closing par 5 demand length, accuracy, and careful planning, especially when wind and water hazards threaten scoring.

The Good

Golfers love the thrilling Olympic legacy and the unique design integrating native vegetation, sandy waste areas, and large undulating greens. The finishing stretch, especially holes 16–18, offers memorable shots and dramatic tournament moments, making play here feel special—no matter your skill level.

The Not So Good

Some visitors mention that the flat terrain makes certain stretches visually repetitive, and occasional maintenance lapses—especially in shoulder seasons—can affect turf quality. More frequent bunker raking and improved drainage in wet months would elevate the playing experience for all golfers.
