Course Report

Royal Wellington is the only golf club in New Zealand to hold 'Royal' status, an honor awarded in 2004 by Prince Andrew.

About

Royal Wellington Golf Club, founded in 1895 and redesigned in 2013 by Greg Turner and Scott Macpherson, is a renowned parkland course set in the Hutt Valley north of Wellington. This private club is famed for tree-lined fairways, strategic water hazards, and beautifully contoured bentgrass greens. The club has hosted multiple national championships and maintains a stately, historic clubhouse.

Caddie Tip

Course management is key at Royal Wellington—stay below the hole to approach the contoured, fast greens. Position your drives for the best angles, especially on water holes. Wind can often change club selection; study each green’s slope and don't be afraid to lay up on the signature 4th. If in doubt, aim for the centre of the green rather than attacking tucked pins.

The Main Challenge

Royal Wellington’s toughest challenge lies in its contoured greens and strategic water hazards, especially in swirling valley winds. Approaching greens from poor angles makes up-and-downs demanding. Several holes require careful club selection off the tee, and reaching par-5 greens in two is risky with hazards in play. When greens are at their fastest, scoring is notably difficult.

The Good

Golfers love the classic parkland setting, highlighted by mature trees, flowing water hazards, and serene valley views. The greens are praised for their intrigue and challenge, with each one presenting a new puzzle. The friendly, welcoming membership and historic yet comfortable clubhouse enhance the overall experience, making visitors feel they are stepping into a pillar of New Zealand golfing heritage.

The Not So Good

Some golfers note that conditions can vary in wet seasons, with softer turf reducing roll and affecting the challenge. Play can slow on busy member days, and the private nature of the club limits access for visitors. The reliance on foliage creates some visual repetition between holes, and the river’s proximity occasionally causes drainage issues after heavy rain.

Signature Hole:

#

4

No items found.

The 4th hole is a par 5 where the fairway splits around a stream with a lake guarding the right side near the green. Strategic play is vital as the green lies behind the water, set at a right angle to the fairway, demanding precision on the approach. The expansive but narrow green makes birdie possible, but only with well-executed shots.

Clubhouse

The stately clubhouse features a full restaurant, bar, member lounges, locker rooms, and private event rooms. Guests enjoy classic hospitality in a well-preserved historical building, while outside terraces allow beautiful views across the course. Additional amenities include tennis courts, croquet, and modern meeting facilities.

Practice Facilities

Royal Wellington offers a modern driving range, short game area, and large practice putting green. Golfers will find ample space for full-swing and short-game practice. The club also offers professional instruction, club fitting, and a well-stocked pro shop for both members and guests.
