Course Report
Salish Cliffs was the first golf course in the world to be certified 'Salmon-Safe' for its environmental protection practices, and it shares a spectacular 15,000 sq. ft. double green between holes 9 and 18.
About
Salish Cliffs Golf Club in Shelton, Washington, is a visually striking Gene Bates design owned by the Squaxin Island Tribe. Opened in 2011, it features 18 secluded holes winding through 600 feet of elevation change, bentgrass tees to greens, expansive Kamilche Valley views, and is recognized for its environmental stewardship as the world's first Salmon-Safe certified golf course.
Caddie Tip
Conservative play is rewarded—deep forest lines many holes, punishing inaccuracy. Changes in elevation amplify club selection decisions, so trust the yardage but factor significantly for uphill and downhill shots, especially on approach to the greens. Take advantage of birdie chances on par 5s and be wary of slick, sloping bentgrass greens.
The Main Challenge
Salish Cliffs is defined by frequent elevation changes, tight tree-lined fairways, and fast bentgrass greens. Strategic bunkering and sloping target areas demand precision off the tee and careful approaches; holes often penalize wayward shots with forested trouble and wetland hazards.
The Good
Golfers praise Salish Cliffs for its sense of seclusion, spectacular Kamilche Valley views, and natural harmony, with over 600 feet of elevation change and holes carved into thick forests. The pristine bentgrass turf, strong layout variety, frequent changes in direction, and overall tranquility make rounds both beautiful and memorable.
The Not So Good
Players occasionally report slow pace of play during busy weekends, and some wish for more walking-friendly routing given the course’s elevation. While conditions are strong overall, challenging rough and dewy mornings can increase difficulty for less skilled or early-day golfers.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The par-5 18th at Salish Cliffs finishes dramatically over water, ending on a vast double green shared with the 9th. Players face an uphill tee shot to a generous fairway that slopes toward wetlands, with a risk-reward second shot tempting long hitters to reach in two. Native vegetation and a scenic lake emphasize the hole’s striking finish.
Clubhouse
A log-and-cedar style clubhouse features a well-stocked pro shop, full-service restaurant and bar, modern locker rooms, and indoor lounge areas. Guests have access to Titleist rental clubs, golf instruction, convenient resort amenities via Little Creek Casino, and a welcoming, well-appointed setting pre- and post-round.
Practice Facilities
Salish Cliffs offers a full-length, grass driving range and a comprehensive short game area with bunkers and large putting greens. Ample practice space and range balls before play complement the strong on-course experience, supported by attentive staff and PGA instruction available.
