Gene Bates was the only bidder for the Circling Raven Golf Club who personally walked the entire prospective site, earning him the project and cementing his reputation for a hands-on approach.
Gene Bates is a veteran golf course architect with over 40 years of experience, known for his work across public, private and resort venues worldwide. From collaborations with Fred Couples and Johnny Miller to standalone designs like Circling Raven, he brings construction savvy and strategic depth to projects in diverse settings.
Gene Bates was born in 1947 in Cambridge, Ohio, son of a game warden, which instilled an early love of the outdoors. He studied wildlife biology at Ohio University and Colorado State University before entering heavy construction and mining. A chance meeting on a flight led to marriage with Faye Kirby, daughter of architect Ron Kirby, pulling him into golf design.
From 1978 to 1983, Bates served as project administrator for Ron Kirby and Gary Player in Atlanta, learning routing, strategy and bunker design while overseeing builds in Hong Kong, Philippines, South Africa, Zimbabwe and the U S. In 1983 he joined Jack Nicklaus Golf Services as Vice President of Design and Construction, managing multimillion dollar projects in the U S, England, Austria, Japan, Switzerland and the Caribbean.
Bates launched Gene Bates Golf Design in 1988 and became Vice President of Couples Bates Golf Design in 1992. He partnered with Fred Couples on projects like Hamilton Mill and San Juan Oaks, leveraging Couples's input for playability. Collaborations with Johnny Miller produced six courses, including Binks Forest and Due Process Stables.
His firm, now Bates Golf Group, has handled over 150 projects as designer, consultant or renovator. Bates acts as "team captain," handling routing, strategy and grow in while coordinating agronomists and shapers. Expertise spans budgeting, scheduling and maintenance, honed on $2 10 million jobs.
Bates focuses on tournament quality yet player friendly layouts tailored to site, budget and audience. He emphasizes strategy from Kirby and Player, quality from Nicklaus, and visual appeal from pros like Couples. Designs balance challenge with forgiveness via multiple tees and options, suiting public access to private clubs.
Strengths include dramatic routings on constrained sites, like wetlands or railroads, and renovations preserving originals while updating playability. Awards highlight Sentosa in Singapore; his portfolio mixes quirky private courses with resort standouts.
Bates's work spans continents, with acclaim in the U S West and Asia. Highlights:
Others include Bayonet at Seaside (redesign), Broken Sound Old Course and El Gouna in Egypt.
ASGCA member; Golf Course Architect of the Year 2004. Courses earn nods from Golf Digest, Golf Magazine and Audubon. Bates Golf Group preserves owner visions with post opening support.

Bates's career bridges apprenticeships with Player, Nicklaus and pros, yielding versatile designs from quirky private to grand resorts. For global directories, his work offers consistent quality across U S, Asia and beyond.
