Course Report

Soldier Hollow is the only golf course built on an Olympic Games venue, being part of the site used during the 2002 Winter Olympics.

About

Soldier Hollow Golf Course (Gold) is a dramatic mountain course designed by Gene Bates, set at high elevation above Midway, Utah. Known for its elevation changes, fast greens, challenging layout, and breathtaking views of the Heber Valley and Mount Timpanogos, this course was built on a former Olympic venue and is regarded as one of Utah’s finest public-access courses.

Caddie Tip

Pay special attention to elevation changes and wind direction on every approach. Club selection is critical as distances may play differently due to altitude. Greens break subtly toward the valley. Staying below the hole is key, and play extra safe on holes with steep drop-offs, as errant shots can easily run off into trouble.

The Main Challenge

The Gold Course’s major challenge is its significant elevation changes that require precision both in club selection and ball striking. Narrow fairways, steep drop-offs, and firm, fast greens place a premium on accuracy off the tee and careful play into greens. Gusty winds can further penalize overly aggressive or misjudged approaches.

The Good

Golfers absolutely love the stunning panoramic views across the Heber Valley and Mount Timpanogos from nearly every hole. The unique Olympic connection, fast greens, and dramatic mountain routing combine for a memorable round, with the sense of isolation, native vegetation, and high-quality design adding to the experience.

The Not So Good

Some players comment that, due to the dramatic terrain and elevation changes, the course can be difficult to walk and demanding for less experienced golfers. Others have noted that high summer traffic can lead to somewhat slow rounds, and winds may amplify the challenge on exposed holes.
