Course Report

Golf Digest referred to Samoset as the 'Pebble Beach of the East' in a 2023 article thanks to its dramatic setting and oceanside holes.

About

Samoset Resort Golf Club is an 18-hole course in Rockport, Maine, originally designed by Robert Elder in 1902 with subsequent updates by Geoffrey Cornish and Bradley Booth. It is renowned for its dramatic oceanside holes, scenic views of Penobscot Bay, and challenging layout. The course is consistently praised for premier conditions, memorable design touches, and a welcoming resort atmosphere.

Caddie Tip

On windy days, club selection is particularly important, as brisk coastal gusts can add or subtract significant yardage. Play conservatively off the tee on tighter doglegs, and favor approaches that leave uphill putts, especially on greens near the seawall which tend to break hard toward the water.

The Main Challenge

The course's main challenge lies in the constant presence and variability of wind off Penobscot Bay, deceptive sight lines on doglegs, and approach shots to elevated, well-guarded greens. Several holes run right along the ocean, where tight fairways and natural hazards demand accuracy and smart shot choices throughout the round.

The Good

Golfers rave about the expansive water views from 14 of the 18 holes and the exceptional conditioning of both fairways and greens. The oceanside holes provide a memorable and tranquil setting, making rounds at Samoset feel like a vacation event and a bucket-list must for visitors to coastal Maine.

The Not So Good

Some guests note that on busy days, pace of play can slow, especially when the course is full in peak summer months. The exposed coastal holes are susceptible to wind, which can make play more challenging for higher handicappers and reduce consistency of playing experience during blustery days.

The 4th hole, a par 5 dogleg left, is Samoset's signature, hugging the coast with a beautiful seawall and views of the Atlantic and Penobscot Bay. Playing alongside the ocean, the fairway bends with natural contours and hazards, and the approach to its contoured green is guarded by bunkers and elevation, creating both a visual and strategic highlight.
