Course Report

Sankaty Head operates one of the last true caddie camps in the world, Camp Sankaty Head, which has run since the late 1930s and is a respected institution in American golf.

About

Sankaty Head Golf Club, designed by Emerson Armstrong and opened in 1923, is a classic links-style 18-hole private course perched dramatically on the edge of Nantucket Island. Known for sweeping Atlantic vistas, firm turf, and the iconic Sankaty Head Lighthouse, the club blends understated exclusivity with authentic seaside golf and a unique caddy camp tradition.

Caddie Tip

Keep your shots below the wind, especially on the coastal holes. Most holes play firmer and faster than mainland parkland tracks, so approach shots should land short and roll out toward the target. The routing places a premium on accuracy as exposed seaside holes are unforgiving in strong winds.

The Main Challenge

Windswept holes along the Atlantic present the toughest exam, especially when gusts change direction during a round. The firm turf demands precise control, and several greens are well-defended by deep bunkering. Players must manage club selection and trajectory to deal with unpredictable, often strong winds.

The Good

Golfers rave about the classic seaside links experience, dramatic coastal views, and the authentic, windswept feel which evoke the traditions of top British Isles courses. The setting aside the Atlantic and the ever-present lighthouse make it a memorable and highly atmospheric round.

The Not So Good

Some members wish for enhancements to the practice facilities and on-course amenities. The firm and fast conditions, while true to links golf, can be punishing for higher handicaps. The remote location also means access can be a logistical challenge for guests and new members.
