Course Report
Shangri-La added 'The Battlefield' in 2023, an acclaimed 18-hole par-3 course built with over 100 feet of elevation changes and recognized as Oklahoma’s Best New Attraction by the Oklahoma Travel Industry Association.
About
Shangri-La Golf Club, originally designed by Donald Sechrest and later updated by Tripp Davis, sits along the scenic shores of Grand Lake on Monkey Island, Oklahoma. Featuring three distinct nine-hole layouts surrounded by lake views and rolling zoysia fairways, it’s widely recognized for its blend of championship golf, resort amenities, and relaxed atmosphere. The Battlefield par-3 course, added in 2023, enhances its appeal as a destination golf experience.
Caddie Tip
Take note of swirling lake winds—they can significantly affect club selection, especially on exposed holes near the water. Play approach shots onto greens conservatively, as subtle breaks in the zoysia can challenge even skilled putters. If you're new to the course, opt for conservative lines off the tee until you've gauged the spacious yet strategic layouts.
The Main Challenge
Spacing along some fairways and the strategic use of white sand bunkers present real tests, especially in crosswinds from the lake. Water hazards and subtle elevation changes demand accuracy and disciplined course management. On several approach shots, slopes and false fronts can reject errant plays and create tough recovery situations.
The Good
Golfers rave about the variety and quality of the three nines, each offering different challenges and stunning lake views. The tranquil setting, upscale resort amenities—including a new par-3 course, spa, pool, and marina—provide a complete, memorable golf getaway. Guests especially enjoy the superior maintenance, welcoming service, and the flexibility to mix-and-match nines for a different experience each time.
The Not So Good
While course conditions are generally strong, some guests have noted that pace of play can slow during busy weekends and large corporate outings. Others occasionally wish for more walking-friendly routing between some holes and quicker green speeds. Periodic bunker maintenance and signage upgrades are requested by avid golfers familiar with the course.
Signature Hole:
#
18
The 18th hole, a par 4, showcases Grand Lake views from an elevated tee shot over sweeping fairways and a challenging approach to a well-bunkered green. This finishing hole is recognized for its scenic drama and stern test, requiring both length and precision, and is often cited as the club’s standout for its memorable vistas and tournament-caliber finish.
Clubhouse
The clubhouse offers a modern pro shop, luxurious locker rooms, lakeside dining and lounges, and event spaces. Guests enjoy upscale food and beverage service, carefully curated golf merchandise, and sweeping views of Grand Lake from restaurant terraces.
Practice Facilities
Shangri-La features a spacious driving range, multiple putting greens, and a dedicated short game and chipping area. The facilities are designed for both pre-round warm-ups and focused game improvement sessions, meeting the needs of players of all skill levels.
