Course Report

Silver Lakes features three full-length nines—Heartbreaker, Backbreaker, Mindbreaker—and a top-caliber 9-hole short course, all boasting elevated greens for extra challenge.

About

Silver Lakes Golf Course, opened in 1993 and designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., is part of the famed RTJ Golf Trail. It showcases 36 holes across rolling terrain, dramatic elevation changes, hardwood and pine forests, and lakeside views, offering a scenic and challenging experience in the Appalachian foothills. The greens feature Champion ultra-dwarf Bermuda for consistent putting surfaces.

Caddie Tip

Many greens are elevated and heavily bunkered, so choose your approach club carefully and favor the center of greens. The hilly terrain makes for uneven lies and challenging club selection. Play conservatively off the tee on tight holes to avoid the punishing rough and water hazards, especially on the finishing holes of each nine.

The Main Challenge

The biggest challenge at Silver Lakes lies in navigating its elevation changes and elevated, well-protected greens, which demand accurate approach shots and solid short game. Water hazards are strategically placed on several holes, and tight, tree-lined fairways put a premium on shot placement throughout the round.

The Good

Golfers consistently praise the scenic elevation changes, spectacular hilltop vistas, and the challenge of playing through hardwood forests in the foothills of the Appalachians. The variety of nines and the impressive condition of the Champion Bermuda greens make for a memorable round every time.

The Not So Good

Some golfers wish for more detailed course signage and suggest that summer rough can become overly penal, making ball location difficult for higher handicaps. Drainage after heavy rains occasionally causes softer fairway conditions and pace-of-play slowdowns.

Signature Hole:

#

9

No items found.

The signature hole is the par 4 ninth on the Heartbreaker course. This challenging dogleg forces players to carry water off the tee and again on approach, with the green threatened by water on three sides. Its elevated green, scenic lake views, and risk-reward opportunity make it the standout test at Silver Lakes.

Clubhouse

No items found.

The modern clubhouse offers a pro shop, dining options, locker rooms, meeting spaces, and panoramic views of the course. Guests enjoy well-appointed amenities and friendly staff, making for a comfortable experience before and after the round.

Practice Facilities

No items found.

A comprehensive practice center includes a large driving range, putting greens, and chipping areas with bunkers. The facilities are ideal both for warm-up and for dedicated practice sessions, catering to serious players and beginners alike.
