Course Report
St Francis Links held South Africa's first-ever 'Ultimate Par 3' event, where the entire course was temporarily converted to 18 par-3 holes for a quick and unique round.
About
St Francis Links, designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 2007, is widely considered one of South Africa’s top 10 golf courses. Sculpted among coastal dunes near the Indian Ocean, its links-style layout offers challenging play, firm turf, and natural scenery. The course regularly earns accolades for conditioning and memorable design, while delivering a blend of classic traditions and modern amenities.
Caddie Tip
Wind is a key factor on most holes, especially near the ocean. On long par 4s and par 5s, play low, controlled shots; the firm fairways allow creative running approaches. On hole 5, weigh risks carefully—going for the green can pay off but the bunkers are deep and penal.
The Main Challenge
Prevailing winds and rolling dunes make club selection and shot-making essential throughout the round. The finishing stretch, notably holes 15, 17, and 18, require precise positioning to avoid deep bunkers and undulating greens exposed to gusty coastal weather.
The Good
Golfers rave about the spectacular coastal setting, world-class conditioning, and the strategic design by Jack Nicklaus. Wind and firm turf provide a true links experience, with memorable holes and a welcoming clubhouse that make every visit special.
The Not So Good
Some guests find pace of play can be slow during busy periods due to a challenging layout and heavy visitor traffic, especially on weekends. More signage for navigation, additional shelter from wind, and expanded tee time availability are frequently requested.
Signature Hole:
#
17
Hole 17 is a par 3 with a Redan-style green set in dunes, playing between 125 and 190 metres. Known for its slope towards the back pin, it rewards shots to the heart of the green and is famed for producing many holes-in-one. It’s a dramatic, wind-exposed challenge that’s a highlight for visitors.
Clubhouse
Modern clubhouse offering locker rooms, showers, a full-service restaurant, bar, golf shop, and unique ocean views from the terrace. On-site accommodation is available near the clubhouse for multi-day visits.
Practice Facilities
Excellent practice range with spacious grass bays well separated from the clubhouse, a dedicated short-game area, putting green, and PGA professional instruction available.
