Course Report

Stonehenge gets its name from the native walls of rock incorporated into many holes, with most famously the stone-island green on its signature 14th hole.

About

Stonehenge Golf Club at Fairfield Glade, designed by Joe Lee, is widely recognized as one of Tennessee’s top public courses. The course plays through the wooded Cumberland Plateau, featuring meticulously maintained bentgrass greens and fairways, distinctive stone outcroppings, and several water features, offering a visually dramatic and enjoyable challenge for golfers of any skill level.

Caddie Tip

Pay attention to club selection, especially on downhill approaches such as the signature 14th. The bentgrass greens run quicker than they appear, so leave approach shots below the hole where possible. Watch for swirling Cumberland Plateau winds and avoid going long on par 3s as recovery is often tough.

The Main Challenge

The biggest challenge at Stonehenge is the need for precision off the tee and on approaches, with many holes framed by thick forest and natural rock. Water hazards and significant elevation changes punish errant shots. The fast, firm bentgrass greens reward thoughtful approach play but can trouble those unfamiliar with their quick stimp and subtle breaks.

The Good

Golfers love the scenic setting, with natural rock features, beautifully maintained bentgrass playing surfaces, and spectacular vistas of the Cumberland Plateau. The variety between holes and the memorable par 3s, particularly the 14th, add visual excitement and strategic interest to every round.

The Not So Good

Some guests note that crowded tee times, particularly in peak season, can slow pace of play. Others mention that the course can be tough for higher handicappers, with demanding approaches and several forced carries over hazards and stone formations.

Signature Hole:

#

14

The par 3 14th hole is Stonehenge’s most iconic, playing downhill to a green guarded by a stunning 15-foot layered stone retaining wall along the left and rear. Water and bunkers come into play, demanding precise club selection and nerve. The natural rock and elevation shift make for a memorable shot and a frequently photographed backdrop.
