Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., Sunshine Golf Club in Kunming is an 18-hole, par-72 course renowned for its blend of scenic pine valleys, mountain vistas, and strategic layout. The course uses Bentgrass throughout and incorporates natural caves, lakes, wildflowers, and fruit trees. Recognized as one of Asia's Top 100 Golf Courses, its spacious greens and tournament-level challenge attract both locals and visiting golfers.
Caddie Tip
Given the undulating, difficult terrain of the back nine—especially with hidden breaks in the large, fast greens—pay close attention to your caddie's green-reading skills. Trust local advice on approach angles and club selection, particularly on Peril Peak's elevated holes and blind tee shots.
The Main Challenge
The main challenge lies in the transition from the relatively mild front nine to the undulating, demanding back nine, requiring precise shot placement and green reading. Large, fast greens with subtle breaks test putting skills, while natural hazards like lakes and forests call for strategic thinking throughout.
The Good
Golfers consistently praise the scenery and the course’s well-integrated design, which preserves natural pine valleys and mountain backdrops. The Bentgrass greens are notably large and quick, providing a professional-level putting experience. The driving range, equipped for night practice, is also a major highlight.
The Not So Good
Some players would appreciate improved signage and translations for international visitors. Pace of play can occasionally slow on busy weekends, and the rapidly changing terrain on the back nine may pose challenges for walking golfers and those unfamiliar with the area.
