Course Report

The Bear Trace at Tims Ford is one of only a handful of courses in Tennessee designed by Jack Nicklaus, and it's part of the state's signature Bear Trace trail network.

About

The Bear Trace at Tims Ford is a scenic public layout designed by Jack Nicklaus, set on a peninsula within Tims Ford Lake. Opened in 1999, it offers diverse challenges across 18 holes, notable for both natural beauty and strategic features. Renowned for its engaging shot values, the course attracts golfers seeking an enjoyable and memorable round in Southeast Tennessee.

Caddie Tip

Keep tee shots below the pin on the fast greens to avoid downhill putts. Approach shots on several holes, especially the scenic par 3s, require precise club selection due to swirling winds off the lake. Playing for the center of greens is often safer than attacking tucked flag sticks.

The Main Challenge

The greatest challenge is the penal nature of water hazards and the demand for accuracy off the tee and on approaches, particularly on holes routed near and over Tims Ford Lake. Wind can swirl unexpectedly, and misjudged carries often result in penalizing scores.

The Good

Golfers love the layout’s blend of water holes and wooded parkland, as well as the picturesque lake views throughout the round. Jack Nicklaus’s routing maximizes the natural features and provides varied shot shapes and risk-reward options, resulting in memorable and enjoyable golf for a range of abilities.

The Not So Good

Players commonly note the condition of bunkers as lacking; with some traps needing fresh sand and better maintenance. Inconsistent fairway and green firmness has also been mentioned, especially following wet weather, and improved attention here could elevate playing quality.
