Course Report

From the 18th tee, golfers enjoy a dramatic, elevated view toward the clubhouse and surrounding Black Hills, often cited as one of the most breathtaking finishes in Wyoming golf.

About

The Golf Club at Devils Tower, designed originally by Dick Phelps and updated by Kevin Atkinson and Carl Thuesen, is a private 18-hole layout set across rolling Black Hills terrain in Wyoming. It’s acclaimed for its scenery, elevation changes, and challenging bunkering, with panoramic views of Devils Tower enhancing an engaging playing experience for club members and their guests.

Caddie Tip

Accuracy off the tee is essential, especially with 77 artfully placed bunkers and thick native rough that can penalize wayward shots. Focus on fairways and play conservatively when unsure, especially on holes near native grass. The par 3s can be exposed to wind, so club selection is critical.

The Main Challenge

The real test lies in successfully managing elevation changes, accurately avoiding the 77 bunkers, and coping with tall, punishing native rough. Wind frequently impacts approach shots, and the greens require precise iron play and steady putting to avoid three-putts, especially on the back nine.

The Good

The course's best feature is its striking mountain scenery, with numerous vantage points showcasing Devils Tower and the Black Hills. Members love the well-maintained fairways, engaging risk-reward holes, and sense of seclusion and privacy only found at top private destination clubs.

The Not So Good

Some players note limited play access for non-members and wish for more flexible guest or resort-play policies. Others suggest that higher-handicap players may find the rough overly punitive and would prefer intermediate cuts or shorter native areas in some sections.
