Course Report
Until 1973, the course was only accessible by boat from Malahide marina, reinforcing its storied sense of isolation.
About
Founded in 1890 and set among towering dunes near the Irish Sea, The Island Golf Club is a classic links designed by Fred Hawtree and Eddie Hackett, with later input by Martin Hawtree. It boasts challenging sea breezes, natural terrain, and exceptional greens—earning high praise for authenticity and strategic play.
Caddie Tip
Prevailing winds can dramatically affect club selection, especially on exposed stretches like holes 12 to 15. Don’t be afraid to aim away from trouble and use more club than you think, especially with swirling crosswinds and firm, fast-running links fairways. Putting surfaces are bold, so keeping the ball below the hole helps.
The Main Challenge
The course’s greatest test comes from its combination of narrow, undulating fairways hemmed by towering dunes, frequent crosswinds, and elevated, well-protected greens. Back nine holes along the estuary force demanding shots, and penal rough can quickly escalate scores.
The Good
Golfers rave about the unique natural setting—soaring dunes, sea views on nearly every hole, and the classic links routing that delivers variety and challenge in equal measure. The authentic, unembellished character, combined with fast running fairways and true greens, creates memorable, world-class golf.
The Not So Good
Visitors sometimes note that green fees are among the highest in Ireland, and the course closes to outside play in winter. The demanding layout can be punishing for higher handicappers, especially in strong winds, and rough maintenance varies during the playing season.
Signature Hole:
#
13
The 13th is a daunting par 3, stretching over 220 yards, set amidst dramatic dunes with the beach looming dangerously along the right. A bail-out area left offers some respite, but a bold shot is required for par as wind and elevation conspire to make club selection critical.
Clubhouse
Traditional clubhouse with full-service bar and restaurant, spacious changing rooms, and scenic terrace overlooking the dunes. The club also features a relaxed members’ lounge and a golf history display.
Practice Facilities
Includes a full driving range, dedicated short game area, and putting greens. Lessons and group clinics can be arranged with the resident PGA professional. Club fitting and repairs are available in the well-stocked pro shop.
