Course Report

The site was once known as the 'Keller Pit', a county mine and gravel pit, before over 1.2 million cubic yards of earth were moved and more than 4,000 trees were planted to transform it into a golf haven.

About

The Quarry at La Quinta is an exclusive Tom Fazio design nestled in the Coachella Valley at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains. Opened in 1994, this private club is renowned for outstanding conditioning, creative routing, and dramatic elevation changes of up to 300 feet. The course weaves through an abandoned mine and former gravel pit, offering a unique desert golfing experience.

Caddie Tip

Proper club selection is vital due to elevation changes of up to 300 feet. Focus on precise placement, especially off the tee—over-aggression can bring desert waste areas and deep bunkers into play. Greens are fast and true, so favor conservative approaches and give yourself uphill putts whenever possible.

The Main Challenge

The Quarry’s toughest test comes from its dramatic elevation changes and precise shot requirements. Many holes are bounded by natural rock walls, desert washes, and deep bunkers. The routing forces golfers to adjust club selection frequently and rewards thoughtful strategy over aggressive play.

The Good

Golfers rave about the Quarry’s impeccable course conditions, often ranked among the best in the country. The absence of tee times and limited membership ensure quiet, uncrowded play. The variety in elevation, strategic design, and natural beauty make each round uniquely memorable and rewarding.

The Not So Good

Because of its exclusivity, access is limited strictly to members and their guests. Some players wish there was more availability for outside play or special events. The challenging layout can also be intimidating to higher handicaps, who may struggle with forced carries and demanding approach shots.
