Course Report

Titirangi is the only course in New Zealand designed by Dr. Alister MacKenzie, the architect behind Augusta National, Cypress Point, and Royal Melbourne.

About

Titirangi Golf Club is Auckland’s premier golf destination, designed in 1927 by the legendary Alister MacKenzie. Set amidst native bushland between the Waitakere Ranges and Manukau Harbour, the course is known for its strategic bunkers, undulating greens, and thoughtful design. It is the only MacKenzie course in New Zealand and consistently ranks among the nation’s top venues.

Caddie Tip

Focus on accurate club selection around the challenging greens and pay close attention to wind direction, as each of the four par 3s faces a different compass point. On hole 13, avoid the tree in the center of the fairway and play conservatively to the wide landing areas. Trust the undulating greens—aim for the correct tier to avoid three-putts.

The Main Challenge

Titirangi’s biggest challenge is its MacKenzie-inspired green complexes and bunkering. Undulating, sloping putting surfaces demand precision on approach shots and short game. Risk-reward choices abound, especially across the famous par-5 13th and four par 3s, each facing a different direction and influenced by shifting winds.

The Good

Golfers love Titirangi’s classic MacKenzie architecture—bold bunkering, sloping greens, and risk-reward strategy on every hole. The setting in lush New Zealand bushland offers a tranquil, scenic escape, while the course’s variety ensures every round is engaging. Its reputation as New Zealand’s premier design and playability consistently draws praise from members and travelers alike.

The Not So Good

Some visitors mention that inclement weather and soft conditions during wetter months can affect overall course playability. Drainage improvements and more year-round conditioning could further elevate the playing experience, particularly for those expecting firm, fast, sandbelt-style surfaces each season.

Hole 13, a par 5 known as "The Wrecker," is Titirangi’s signature challenge. Featuring a tree in the middle of the fairway and a demanding approach to a well-protected green, the hole tests strategy and nerve. A famous member score of albatross here highlights its risk-reward potential and memorable layout for all golfers.

Clubhouse

The recently renovated clubhouse features locker rooms, well-appointed lounge and dining spaces, a pro shop with gear and apparel, equipment hire, and on-site staff ready to assist. Enjoy refreshments and meals overlooking the picturesque opening and closing holes.
